Most people driving across the Causeway head straight for the beach. That's their loss. Spanish Fort and Daphne -- the two communities that anchor the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay -- offer a full day of history, waterfront parks, local food, and genuine character that the beach towns can't match.
Start the Morning in Spanish Fort
Rise Breakfast & Tacos
10198 Highway 31, Spanish Fort | Tue--Sat 7 AM--12 PM | Closed Sun--Mon
This is a made-to-order breakfast spot with a sticker-covered interior and a primarily takeout setup -- which means it moves fast and the food is fresh. Eggs Benedict variations, breakfast burritos, and bowls are the core of the menu. Get there before 9 AM on Saturdays or expect a wait.
Soul Caffeine -- Spanish Fort
7635 Spanish Fort Boulevard | Mon--Fri 6 AM--4 PM, Sat--Sun 7 AM--4 PM
A local coffee chain with a Spanish Fort outpost. Specialty espresso drinks, solid atmosphere, and early hours make it the easy coffee stop before you head into the park. If you're coming from the Daphne side, there's also a Soul Caffeine location on U.S. 98.
The Anchor Attraction: Historic Blakeley State Park
Historic Blakeley State Park
34745 Alabama 225, Spanish Fort | Daily 8 AM--9 PM
This is the reason to make the trip. Historic Blakeley State Park is a 1,400-acre wooded riverside park built on the site of a onetime town and one of Alabama's most significant Civil War battlefields. The park offers camping, hiking rated easy to moderate, and regular Civil War living history events -- check the park website for current event schedules and admission fees. Dogs are welcome, the grounds are family-friendly, and the trail network covers terrain that most people don't expect to find this close to a suburban exit ramp.
If you want to add a waterfront angle to the morning, Meaher State Park on Battleship Parkway is a short drive away. It's a calmer, more traditional state park -- fishing pier, waterfront boardwalk, picnic areas, camping -- open daily from 7 AM to 6 PM and dog-friendly.
Lunch Along the Causeway
The stretch of Battleship Parkway running through Spanish Fort has three waterfront seafood restaurants within a short distance of each other. They all have bay views and they all draw a crowd on weekends.
Felix's Fish Camp Restaurant
1530 Battleship Parkway, Spanish Fort | Mon--Sat 11 AM--10 PM | Closed Sun | $$
The most storied of the Causeway spots. She-crab soup and crawfish-smothered pork chops are what it's known for. Rustic setting, live music, full bar. Good for groups.
Original Oyster House
3733 Battleship Parkway, Spanish Fort | Daily 11 AM--9:30/10 PM | $$
Gulf and Southern-style seafood in wood-paneled digs overlooking Mobile Bay. It's a laid-back scene, kid-friendly, and has over 4,700 Google reviews -- which tells you it's been doing something right for a long time.
BLUEGILL Restaurant
3775 Battleship Parkway, Spanish Fort | Tue--Sun 11 AM--10 PM | Closed Mon | $$
Oysters, live music, sunset views of Mobile Bay. BLUEGILL is the most outdoorsy feeling of the three -- open-air seating and a crowd that skews toward people who actually live here. The live music schedule makes Friday and Saturday evenings a different scene than a weekday lunch.
If you want something away from the Causeway, R and R Seafood on Battleship Parkway is a wood-paneled market-style spot with fresh fish and po' boys. Closed Tuesdays.
For a non-seafood lunch in Spanish Fort, Cheryls Cafe and Market on Spanish Fort Boulevard runs a tight lunch-only operation, Monday through Friday 11 AM--2:30 PM, with a budget price point and a loyal local following.
Mid-Afternoon: Cross into Daphne and Olde Towne
Olde Towne Daphne -- the stretch of Main Street that runs through the original townsite -- is where Daphne still has its identity intact. It's compact, walkable, and worth an afternoon.
Manci's Antique Club
1715 Main Street, Daphne | Tue--Thu & Sun 11 AM--9 PM, Fri--Sat 11 AM--10 PM | $$
Don't let the name confuse you -- Manci's is a bar and restaurant, not a store. Po' boys, Southern-style sandwiches, outdoor seating, full bar, and live music. It's an offbeat room with good energy and the kind of casual vibe that makes an afternoon drink feel earned. Good for groups.
Dragonfly Tavern
1800 Main Street, Daphne | Tue--Sat 11 AM--9 PM, Mon lunch only | $$
Asian-Mexican fusion gastropub with creative tacos, noodle bowls, and salads in an art-filled setting. Sister restaurant to Dragonfly Foodbar in Fairhope. The outdoor seating faces Main Street, which is a good perch on a weekday afternoon when parking is easy.
Kitchen On Main
1716 Main Street, Daphne | Tue--Fri lunch & dinner, Sat dinner only, Mon lunch only
If you want proper dinner in Olde Towne, Kitchen On Main is the move. Intimate casual fine dining, American cuisine with a playful twist, known for outstanding crab cakes and soft jazz in the background. Not flagged as good for children -- this one's for adults who want to actually taste their food. Reservations available.
Cloud Mountain Coffee
1305 Main Street, Daphne | Mon--Fri 6:30 AM--5 PM, Sat 7 AM--4 PM | Closed Sun
A nonprofit coffee shop on Main Street where all proceeds benefit Konbit Haiti community development. Craft coffee, New York bagels, and gluten-free vegan scones alongside a fair-trade boutique. Dog-friendly, outdoor seating available. A 5.0 Google rating on 53 reviews is about as rare as it gets.
Daphne History Museum
405 Dryer Avenue, Daphne | Wed--Sat 1--4 PM
Daphne's history museum is housed in the historic 1858 Daphne Methodist Church -- listed on the National Register of Historic Places and described as the second oldest church in Baldwin County. The museum features period clothing, arts and crafts, and rotating exhibits. Open Wednesday through Saturday afternoons only. Worth stopping in if your timing lines up.
Black Education Museum
1000 Main Street, Daphne | Mon, Wed & Fri 10 AM--2 PM
A gallery space on Main Street focused on Black education history. Limited hours -- Monday, Wednesday, and Friday only -- so check your timing before you go.
Bayfront Parks
Daphne is called the Jubilee City for a reason -- the shallow western shore of Mobile Bay is one of the few places in the world where the annual jubilee phenomenon occurs, and the parks that line the waterfront reflect that identity.
Village Point Park Preserve
27710 Main Street, Daphne | Daily 8 AM--6 PM
The best of Daphne's bayfront parks. Beach access, nature trails rated easy to moderate, picnic areas, and the famous Jackson Oak -- a massive live oak on the preserve grounds. Dog-friendly. The trails are short enough for families with young kids but have enough canopy and shoreline views to make it genuinely pleasant.
May Day Park
College Avenue, Daphne | Daily 6 AM--8 PM
Bayfront green space with a playground, fishing pier, a beach, and water access for canoes and kayaks. Dog-friendly. This is the most active of the waterfront parks -- fishing, paddling, and kids on the playground all happening at once on a weekend morning.
Gator Boardwalk
North Main Street, Daphne | Open 24 hours
A boardwalk access point off Main Street. Dog-friendly, open all day, good for a quick bayfront walk without committing to a full park visit.
Dinner
Southwood Kitchen
1203 US-98 East, Daphne | Tue--Sat 11 AM--9 PM | Closed Sun--Mon | $$$
The upscale option in Daphne. American fare with area-sourced ingredients, full bar, and reservations available. Lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday -- note that it's closed Sunday and Monday, which catches visitors off-guard. Not flagged as good for children; this one skews adult.
Boudreaux's Cajun Grill
29249 U.S. 98, Daphne | Tue--Fri 3--9 PM, Sat 11 AM--9 PM, Sun brunch 10 AM--3 PM | $$
Waterfront bar and kitchen with Cajun seafood, steak, and a covered deck. Sunday brunch is the scene here -- come for the covered deck and the bay views. Closed Mondays.
Tulum Mexican Cuisine
9878 Spanish Fort Boulevard, Daphne | Mon--Thu 11 AM--9 PM, Fri--Sat until 10 PM, Sun 10 AM--9 PM
Over 2,600 Google reviews and a 4.9 rating. That's not an accident. Tulum does creative takes on traditional dishes -- birria ramen alongside classic tacos, fajitas, and steaks -- with a contemporary presentation. Reservations available. Good for groups. Sunday brunch is served.
The Waterfront
1 Yacht Club Drive, Daphne | Daily 11 AM--9 PM | $$
Seafood, burgers, and cocktails on Mobile Bay with live music. Walk-ins only -- no reservations. If you want a bay view at dinner without the Causeway crowds, this is the spot.
For Families
Daphne has invested heavily in family infrastructure, and a few spots are worth noting specifically if you have kids.
Purple Park Inclusive Playground
7060 Park Drive, Daphne | Open 24 hours | Free
An all-inclusive playground inside the Daphne Sports Complex designed for children of all abilities. Adaptive play structures, shaded seating, and the Jubilee Splash Pad (open daily 10 AM--7 PM). Free admission. One of the better public parks in Baldwin County for families traveling with kids who have diverse needs.
Tortuga Adventure Golf
30500 State Highway 181, Spanish Fort | Tue--Thu noon--7 PM, Fri--Sat noon--8 PM, Sun 1--6 PM
Indoor blacklight mini-golf with a pirate theme at Eastern Shore Centre. Eighteen holes through six glow-in-the-dark themed rooms with life-sized pirate statues and treasure caves. Check hours -- it's closed Mondays.

Bowling, laser tag, and an arcade plus a seafood restaurant and snack bar. The rainy-day backup plan for this stretch of the Eastern Shore.

Tips for Using This Guide
Day-trippers from the beach: The drive from Gulf Shores to Spanish Fort or Daphne is shorter than most people think. This makes a legitimate day trip, especially if you're staying a full week and want a break from sand.
Best day to go: Avoid Monday -- several of the best local spots (Southwood Kitchen, Manci's, Rise Breakfast & Tacos, David's Catfish House) are closed. Tuesday through Saturday gives you the most options.
Olde Towne Daphne parking: Street parking on Main Street fills on weekend afternoons. Arrive before 1 PM or walk in from a side street.
Daphne History Museum and Black Education Museum: Both have limited hours. The History Museum runs Wednesday through Saturday afternoons only; the Black Education Museum opens Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. Check before you go.
With dogs: Village Point Park Preserve, May Day Park, Gator Boardwalk, Historic Blakeley State Park, Meaher State Park, and Cloud Mountain Coffee are all dog-friendly. The Daphne Dog Park on Whispering Pines Road is open daily 7 AM--10 PM if your dog needs a dedicated run.
Shopping: Eastern Shore Centre in Spanish Fort is the main retail hub -- open daily 10 AM--9 PM. Stewart Heath Gallery is inside the centre if you want to pick up original art.
If this kind of day appeals to you, there's more ground to cover nearby. A Day in Fairhope, Alabama covers the Eastern Shore's most walkable downtown, and Arts and Culture on the Eastern Shore goes deeper on the gallery scene that connects Fairhope, Daphne, and the surrounding area. If you're newer to Baldwin County altogether, the Newcomer's Guide to Baldwin County has the lay of the land.
