The Gulf Coast has a lot going for it when it comes to romance. The sunsets are professionally beautiful. The seafood is fresh. The pace is slow enough that you can actually sit across from someone and have a conversation without checking your phone. And there are enough options -- from barefoot beach dinners to white-tablecloth waterfront restaurants -- that you can tailor the evening to whatever kind of night you're in the mood for.

Here's how we'd plan it.

The Upscale Dinner

Voyagers at Perdido Beach Resort -- Orange Beach

27200 Perdido Beach Blvd

Beachfront fine dining with sunset views that are almost unfairly romantic. Chef Brody Olive -- dubbed the "King of American Seafood" -- runs a Gulf Coast-focused menu that treats local ingredients with the respect they deserve. The restaurant sits inside the Perdido Beach Resort with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the Gulf. When the sun starts to drop, every table in the house becomes the best seat.

The move: Time your reservation for 45 minutes before sunset. You'll be ordering appetizers when the sky starts to change colors.

Jesse's Restaurant -- Magnolia Springs

14770 Oak Street

For a date night that involves a scenic drive and a restaurant with genuine history, Jesse's in Magnolia Springs is worth the trip from anywhere in Baldwin County. The building has been a community gathering place since the 1920s, and the restaurant combines Allen Brothers steaks with fresh Gulf seafood in a setting that manages to feel both refined and comfortable. Open Monday through Saturday. The drive down through the oak-lined roads of Magnolia Springs is part of the date.

The Sunset Cocktail

Sunset Pointe at Fly Creek Marina -- Fairhope

831 N Section Street

The best sunset view on the Eastern Shore, hands down. Sunset Pointe sits on Mobile Bay at Fly Creek Marina, and the outdoor patio with fire pits is purpose-built for the golden hour. Chef Pete Blohme (of Panini Pete's fame) runs a Gulf-focused kitchen -- crispy oysters, Gulf fish wraps, bouillabaisse -- and the cocktail program is strong enough to stand on its own. Get there early enough to grab a spot outside, order something from the bar, and just watch the sky.

The move: Arrive an hour before sunset. Start with cocktails on the patio. Move inside for dinner after the show.

The Gulf -- Orange Beach

27500 Perdido Beach Blvd

The Gulf is built from repurposed shipping containers right on the sand, and the vibe is the opposite of stuffy -- paper plates, toes in the sand, string lights, fire pits, and some of the best casual seafood on the coast. It's not a traditional date-night spot, but if your idea of romance involves watching the sun disappear over the Gulf of Mexico while eating peel-and-eat shrimp with your hands, this is your place.

The move: Go for the sunset. Stay for the fire pits.

The Live Music Date

Downtown Fairhope

Fairhope's downtown has a live music scene that runs most nights of the week, and the intimate scale of the venues makes it ideal for a date. Singer-songwriters at wine bars, jazz combos at restaurants, acoustic sets at pubs -- the sound is always close and the rooms are always small enough that you feel like you're hearing something meant for you. Check our events calendar for the current lineup.

The move: Dinner at a downtown Fairhope restaurant, then walk to wherever the music is. The town is compact enough to do the whole evening on foot.

The Wharf -- Orange Beach

4700 Wharf Parkway

The Wharf is Orange Beach's entertainment district, and beyond the big amphitheater shows, there's usually live music at the restaurants and bars along the boardwalk. The setup works for date night because you can stroll between venues, grab a drink at one place, listen to music at another, and let the evening evolve. The Ferris wheel at The Wharf is genuinely nice at night -- a short ride with a view of the lights and the water.

The move: Dinner at one of The Wharf's restaurants, live music at the bars, and finish with a ride on the Ferris wheel. It's a cliche, but it works.

The Beach Walk

This one requires no reservation and no cover charge. Wait until after dinner, slip off your shoes, and walk along the beach in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach when the crowds have thinned out. The waves are gentle on this stretch of coast, the sand is soft, and on a clear night the stars compete with the lights from the condos.

The stretch of beach along Gulf State Park between Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is particularly good for evening walks -- it's wider, less developed, and the light pollution is lower than the main beach strips.

The move: After dinner, drive to the Gulf State Park beach access. Walk east toward Orange Beach. Take your time. That's the whole plan.

Putting It Together

Casual date night: The Gulf for sunset and seafood, then a beach walk.

Classic date night: Voyagers for dinner with sunset views, then stroll The Wharf for music and the Ferris wheel.

Eastern Shore date night: Sunset cocktails at Sunset Pointe, live music in downtown Fairhope.

Go-all-in date night: Sail Wild Hearts sunset cruise (they run 1.5-hour sails out of Orange Beach -- light appetizers, bring your own cooler), then dinner at Voyagers.

The Gulf Coast does date night well because the setting does half the work for you. When the restaurant has a sunset view and the walk home is on the beach, you don't have to try that hard. Just show up, slow down, and let the coast handle the rest.
